MONDAY

BLOCK 1 (5PM-6PM)

 
 

OVATION CHANGES

INSTRUCTOR: Amber Schaefer (Ovation Student) and Mr. E (Ovation Director)

DESCRIPTION: This workshop will focus on all things Ovation! We will discuss all the events that take place during the year, as well as general information about our program. From important audition dates to activities planned during the year, learn all about the numerous opportunities Ovation has for its members. We will also provide a tour of various places that we use, from shop to the Black Box and so much more.


BLOCK 2 (6PM-7PM)

OVATION 101

DESCRIPTION: Learn how to act with a British accent! (Helpful for PETER cast members!!!)

WOODWORKING w/ CHANNING AND C

INSTRUCTOR: Channing Grace (Ovation Student) and Mr. C (Ovation Director)

DESCRIPTION: A basic coursework that discusses the safety in a variety power tools in the shop! Use Drills, Miter Saws, Staple Guns, and Jig Saws to make a wooden friend that is a reminder of how to operate these tools safely.

DESCRIPTION: Exploration of basic stage combat techniques! Have fun! Slap your friends!

COLD READING TIPS

INSTRUCTOR: Andrew Love (Voice Actor- One Piece, My Hero Academia, and much more)

DESCRIPTION: This workshop focuses on the area of vocal acting for Voice Over purposes. This will give students an opportunity to learn the process and the techniques before you enter the booth for real. There will be a chance to practice dubbing on a basic level, as well as exercises to work on at home to further practice. With over 20 years of experience in Anime and Video Games, Andrew Love will teach to know your voice and how to use it!

DANCE TIME: Tap-Tastic!!!

INSTRUCTOR: Mikayla Hoffman (U of H student and Choreographer)

DESCRIPTION: Learn a tap combo to “A Cover Is Not the Book” and expand your range of dance skills as you learn new steps. All levels of expertise are welcome and tap shoes are not required. Just be ready to move and try something new! I’m excited to see you there!

Advanced Improv Skillz

INSTRUCTOR: Andrew Bennett and Camden Loyless (Ovation Students)

DESCRIPTION: You’ve seen Improvaganza. You know the games. But what’s that story thing they do at the end? Join Improvaganza captains Andrew Bennett and Camden Loyless as they take you into the world of LONG FORM IMPROV! Make stories up on the spot and learn how to elevate them with improv tools!

LEARN THE LIGHT BOARD

INSTRUCTOR: Evan Strachota (Ovation Student)

DESCRIPTION: In this session you will learn basic programming on the light board. You will learn how to patch a light, complete basic lighting tasks, and program cues and lighting looks!

INSTRUCTOR: Peyton Wood (Director at Goose Creek Memorial High School)

DESCRIPTION: Having qualified for the International Thespian Festival herself in 2014, Ms. Wood has spent a decade in the world of Texas Thespians. In this workshop, Ms. Wood will explain the ins and outs of Texas Thespian IEs as well as Texas Only events, both performance and technical. Any and all questions are welcome, and she can also help you with song and play selections if needed. Come with your questions and let’s gear up for ThesFest 2023!


BLOCK 2 (6PM-7PM)

DEVISED WORK: STORYTELLING AS A GROUP

INSTRUCTOR: Harsa Rutherford (Director- Stephen F Austin High School)

DESCRIPTION: Devised Theater is a process of creating a performance collaboratively. We will be combining devised theatre and storytelling through movement and WATER! You will need to just bring a clear mind, an open heart and clothes you feel comfortable moving a lot in! 

MODEL MAKING: BUILDING THE WORLD OF THE PLAY

INSTRUCTOR: David Smith (Technical Designer)

DESCRIPTION: After discussing different model making techniques and equipment, we’re going to construct a model based on the set for Big Fish! !

FILMMAKING: FROM CONCEPT TO COMPLETION

INSTRUCTOR: Charles Taylor Goubeaud (Producer and Filmmaker based in Los Angeles)

DESCRIPTION: This workshop covers everything from developing ideas and writing scripts to shooting, editing, and producing short films. Whether interested in directing, acting, or using professional equipment, you’ll learn how to collaborate with peers to create your own masterpiece. Harness your creativity and become a skilled filmmaker in this immersive and exciting workshop!


BLOCK 3 (7PM-8PM)

DANCE TIME: HIP HOP AND HAVE FUN!!!

INSTRUCTOR: Mikayla Hoffman (U of H student and Choreographer)

DESCRIPTION: Learn a combo to Tyler the Creator’s “See You Again” and experiment with hip hop movement. Just wear clothes you can move around in and tennis shoes if you want to. I hope to see you there!

WHO AM I??
CREATING SPECIFIC CHARACTERS

INSTRUCTOR: Caylyn Schaefer (Theatre Education Student at The University of Texas)

DESCRIPTION: You’ve been cast as a character. You’ve memorized your lines. But how do you BECOME them? In this workshop, we will use different techniques to best embody our characters and portray them on stage.

COLD READ AUDITIONING

INSTRUCTOR: James Silva (Sam Houston State student and Vocalist)

DESCRIPTION: This workshop will help students begin the skill of cold reading a new script. It will involve some tips and tricks as well as a demonstration and participation from the students. This will be active and engaging for students, and you will take home many skills needed for auditions and performing.

STAGE COMBAT 101

DESCRIPTION: Slap, punch, and pull hair! But not really! Learn how to effectively stage and execute fight scenes in the theatre!

DEVISED THEATRE THROUGH IMPROV

INSTRUCTOR: Kaitlyn Huston (Texas State Graduate- Theatre)

DESCRIPTION: Are you interested in improv? Would you like to work in a non-traditional, collaborative theatrical setting? Come learn all about devising theatre, and participate in some funky and fun activities that help you follow your creative impulses!

ALL I DO IS NGUYEN: KHADI’S SECRETS TO SUCCESS

INSTRUCTOR: Khadi Nguyen (Ovation Student)

DESCRIPTION: Do you ever wonder how Ovation events always run smoothly, or perhaps, how our social media stays at a consistent level of silliness? The answer is YOU. Coming into Ovation can be intimidating at first, but with the right guide, your time in the program will be successful and fun! This workshop will tackle the fundamentals of leadership as well as include helpful lessons on social media presence, staying engaged in the program, and building yourself in Ovation! 

STAGE COMBAT 101

COSTUME DESIGNING: FROM PRE-PRODUCTION TO FINAL DRESS

INSTRUCTOR: Ella Jackson (Graduate of Texas State Theatre)

DESCRIPTION: We will walk through costume designing & drawing as well as paperwork that communicates your designs to a costume shop! Bring pencils! :)


BLOCK 3 (7PM-8PM)

CAREERS IN THEATRE!

INSTRUCTOR: Gwyneth Templonuevo (Former Ovation Student and current Stageworks Artist)

DESCRIPTION: High school is fun! But what happens when it’s done? How do you pursue your passion? In this workshop we will focus on potential job opportunities in the theatrical field and how to get your name out there!

STAGE MANAGEMENT: BLOCKING AND CALLING

INSTRUCTOR: Ella Jackson (Graduate of Texas State Theatre)

DESCRIPTION: As a stage manager, one of your hardest jobs is RECORDING BLOCKING and CALLING THE SHOW! In this workshop, we will play videos and write out blocking for them, and I will provide you all with a challenging call sheet and we’ll take turns doing it to music!

ROOM FOR IMPROV-MENT

INSTRUCTOR: Stephen Bennett (COMEDYSPORTZ Member)

DESCRIPTION: Introduction to key concepts of improv through a series of warmups and games.  No background necessary.  All sales final.
